Katherine Heigl

by Nicole Sperling – EntertainmentWeekly.com

In what could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship, Lionsgate announced today that it has acquired distribution rights to One for the Money, the adaptation of Janet Evanovich’s first novel in her bestselling Stephanie Plum series. Katherine Heigl will play the gutsy, bounty-hunting heroine, whose adventures have spawned 19 books.

Last Song helmer Julie Ann Robinson, who previously directed Heigl on Grey’s Anatomy, will direct from a script recently rewritten by Liz Brixius (Nurse Jackie).

Heigl will play the newly-divorced, recently laid-off 30-year old Plum, who, desperate for income, agrees to work for her slimy cousin and his bail bond company. She lands a huge case, a local cop wanted for murder. Turns out the cop is the guy who broke her heart in high school, and her investigation embroils her in murder, deceit, and a bit of romance.

One for the Money has been in development at Columbia Pictures since the mid-90s. Producer Lakeshore Entertainment acquired the property from Columbia and will now produce along with Lionsgate and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Production is set to begin on July 12.

It’s been rumored for years and now it’s finally happening. Deadline say Stephen King’s masterful fantasy series “The Dark Tower” is headed for theaters. As part of a deal being worked on at Universal (but not yet completed) the seven books which comprise the Dark Tower story will be condensed into three movies, in a script written by Akiva Goldsman and to be directed by Ron Howard.

The deal is also said to include a package which will result in a Dark Tower TV series, though how they’d pull that off in addition to the movies is a complete mystery. Will the three films cover only three of the books, leaving the TV series to cover the rest? Or will they combine all seven books into three films and then create a TV series which picks up where the final “Dark Tower” book leaves off? We won’t know until the deal is finalized and Howard starts talking. King is reportedly working on an eight novel which tackles a different storyline from “The Dark Tower”, that could be possible fodder for the TV series as well.

Laura Vandervoort as Supergirl

by Matt Raub – TheFlickCast.com

ABC has quite a lot going on this season, between the final season of LOST, and the very first season of V, it’s a pretty big time for hour-long science fiction. We recently got the chance to sit down with one of the stars from V, Laura Vandervoort, to talk about her character Lisa. Prior to V, Laura was best known for also playing Kara, a.k.a. Supergirl, on a season of Smallville, which we also discussed.

The Flickcast: What can we expect to see for the rest of this season on V?

Laura Vandervoort: Oh boy! Quite a bit of action and drama because a lot of the main characters that haven’t interacted before are going to, and that’s going to add a lot of plot points and conflict.

There will be explosions, the Fifth Column is going to be creating some havoc, the romance between my character and Tyler (Logan Huffman) thickens, there’s a pregnancy, a death, so much! I think the audience is going to be shocked every time they watch.

Waylon Jennings son Shooter Jennings

Shooter Jennings

By Scott Harris – InsideTV.com

Ever since ‘The Godfather’ became a cultural phenomenon back in the early ’70s, organized crime has been a staple of the entertainment industry. From ‘The Untouchables,’ to ‘Goodfellas’ to ‘The Sopranos,’ film and television have turned bad guys into big money and big ratings. But besides a life of crime, the characters in those stories all had something else in common: they were all from the North.

Well, not anymore. According to Variety, FX has decided to show the world that Southerners can break the law, too, as they have ordered a pilot for ‘Outlaw Country,’ a “thriller and family drama set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime.”

Details are still sketchy, but at least one bona fide son of the South will be involved in the series: Shooter Jennings, son of the legendary country star Waylon Jennings and no stranger to Hollywood himself (he played his father in the big screen Johnny Cash biopic ‘Walk the Line’), is on board as an executive consultant and music supervisor.

Joining Jennings in the executive suite are ‘Sons of Anarchy’ producers Art Linson and John Linson, while writers Josh Goldin (who wrote and directed the Matthew Broderick vehicle ‘Wonderful World’) and Rachel Abramowitz (from the entertainment section of the Los Angeles Times) will be providing the story.

Director Michael Bay

producer director Michael Bay

By Jay A. Fernandez – HollywoodReporter.com

Paramount has picked up the original action screenplay “Heatseekers” from rookie scribe George Mahaffey. The deal was in the mid-six figures.

Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, which signed a first-look deal with Paramount last October to make lower-budget genre pictures, is handling the project. Dunes execs Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing along with Bay, who is not attached to direct.

In the mold of “Fast & Furious” and “Point Break,” “Heatseekers” follows a young ex-military pilot who infiltrates a gang of aerial “pirates” working out of Bangkok and takes part in an elaborate tower heist using powered gliders and parachutes.

Repped by Paradigm and Generate, Mahaffey is an attorney-turned-screenwriter who has sold an original pitch to Thousand Words and worked on an action feature script for producer Arnold Koppelson (“Se7en”).

Platinum Dunes has its “Nightmare on Elm Street” re-boot scratching its way into theaters Friday via Warner Bros. The company most recently produced “Horsemen,” “The Unborn” and a “Friday the 13th” remake.

Third "Ring" thriller coming out in 3D

Ghost girl in TV from "The Ring"

By Borys Kitt – Hollywood Reporter

Combining two of Hollywood’s consuming passions — sequels and 3D — Paramount is moving ahead with a new installment of the horror thriller franchise “The Ring.”

The third entry based on the Japanese horror movies is being called “Ring 3D.”

The original movie, an English-language remake of a 1998 Japanese film, was a critical and commercial hit when it was released in 2002, and it helped usher in a period when Hollywood turned to Asia for horror inspiration. The movies made during that wave tended to be less gory and thus carried PG-13 ratings, and they tried to attract a more female-centric audience.

The first film also opened doors for its director, Gore Verbinski, who went on to direct Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, and gave a bigger American platform to its Australian star, Naomi Watts. A sequel was made in 2005.

The plot of the original film centered on a young journalist investigating a mysterious videotape that seemed to cause the death of anyone within a week of viewing it.

The new film is being fashioned as more teen-centric than the first, and though the plot is being kept under wraps, the aim is to reinvent the franchise. One potential scenario involves teens finding a VHS player that still works.

No director is on board. The script will be written by David Loucka, who penned the Watts-Daniel Craig thriller “Dream House” currently being shot by Morgan Creek.
