Josh Hutcherson

from AceShowBiz.com

Another name has been thrown as the possible depicter of Spider-Man. After wide rumors which mentioned that Logan Lerman is close to nab the role have been debunked, IESB now reports that Josh Hutcherson is among the short list of actor who could replace Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in an untitled Spider-Man reboot.

While the deal has not been sealed, the site claims both Hutcherson and Lerman still have a chance to take the coveted part since they fit the description that Sony wants for Spider-Man’s depicter – “young, unknown and cheap.” IESB has contacted Hutcherson’s publicists but they have not released any comment as of the press time.

“Spider-Man” reboot will follow Peter Parker during his high school age. Sony and Columbia Pictures will release it in 3-D on July 3, 2012 in the U.S. with shooting scheduled to begin in late this year. “500 Days of Summer” director Marc Webb has been tapped to serve behind the lens with the script provided by James Vanderbilt.

Josh Hutcherson perhaps is best known for his role as Walter in 2006 “Zathura” which earned him Leading Young Actor kudo at Young Artist Awards and a nomination for Best Performance by a Younger Actor at Saturn Awards. He additionally has appeared in “Bridge to Terabithia”, “The Vampire’s Assistant” and many others. He can next be seen in “The Kids Are All Right”, starring opposite Annette Bening and Julianne Moore.

"Gattaca" director back with sci-fi fable

writer/director Andrew Niccol

By Borys Kit Borys Kit - Hollywood Reporter

”Gattaca” writer/director Andrew Niccol is working on his next sci-fi movie. Fox-based producer New Regency is in negotiations to pick up “I’m Mortal,” the latest entry in a genre that uses one big idea to reflect on societal issues. Examples range from last year’s “District 9″ to “Children of Men.”

Niccol’s project is set in the not-too-distant future where the aging gene has been switched off. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. The rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality.

The protagonist is a poor young man who comes into a fortune of time, though too late to help his mother from dying. He ends up on the run from a corrupt police force known as “time keepers.”

Niccol’s oeuvre is dotted with such provocative work, including “Gattaca,” “The Truman Show” and “S1mOne,” and insiders say the project, with shades of a grounded “Logan’s Run,” could be Niccol’s most commercial work yet. He has kept a low profile since directing Nicolas Cage in the 2005 arms satire “Lord of War.”

The script is one of the hot projects for the under-25 set because every character looks young. (The scenario makes it so that onscreen, adults such as parents appear to be the same age as their kids.) Niccol is currently ensconced in meetings with a deep pool of candidates, eyeing a summer start in L.A..

Tony and Ridley Scott Want To Run MGM

Tony and Ridley Scott

The Financial Times is reporting in Friday’s edition that Ridley and Tony Scott  ”have expressed interest in running MGM”. The newspaper quotes ”people familiar with the situation” as its sources. The assumption is that, if MGM emerges from the busted auction as a stand-alone and restructured company, a new management team will be brought in to run the studio once its fate is determined by creditors. ”The Scott brothers have their own production company, Scott Free, but it is unclear whether their proposal would involve combining it with MGM, or if they are seeking a stake in the recapitalized studio. They could not be reached for comment.”

Ridley Scott is known for directing such classics as Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma and Louise, and Gladiator while his younger brother Tony Scott is the king of action films, having directed Top Gun, Crimson Tide, and Days of Thunder to name a few. These British brothers have dominated films for 30 years and there’s little to stop them now. Add up the sum total of the revenue of their films plus their filmatic awesomeness, and there is little debate that these brothers are Hollywood royalty.

Mia Kirshner sinks her teeth into her newest role

Mia Kirshner

by Dorothy Snarker – AfterEllen.com

We all know that Jenny Schecter can suck out your soul. And we all know that Jenny is dead. So now, it only follows, that Jenny is now a vampire. Redundant, I know.

Mia Kirshner’s guest starring role on The Vampire Diaries is growing some fangs (literally and figuratively) with the revelation that she is one of the undead. While we haven’t seen her show her vamp self yet, we have seen her in flashbacks as history teacher Alaric Saltzman paranormal researcher wife.

We’ve also learned that Mia’s character, Isobel, is the birth mother to Nina Dobrev’s Elena. But she gave her up for adoption shortly after her birth and made abundantly clear that she wants nothing to do with her in the present. And, oh yeah, Damon turned her. I know — this show is crazy!

Now, metaphorical vampire Jenny aside, this will be the first of two vampiric roles for the former The L Word star. She has also been cast as the vampire queen in the sequel 30 Days of Night: Dark Days. Hmm, is some type casting happening? Is Mia now the go-to bloodsucker of both actual blood and also all sanity as we know it?

Edgerton Talks "The Thing" Prequel

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

By Garth Franklin – DarkHorizons.com

Joel Edgerton

Joel Edgerton previously confirmed that the upcoming “The Thing” project at Universal Pictures is a prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 original.

Now the Aussie actor has gone into more details over at ShockTillYouDrop.com, saying “Well, it’s a prequel and definitely the Norwegian base is modeled on the base you see in the Carpenter film. Being a prequel you’ll see a lot of tie-ins as to how the base comes to be the way it is in the Carpenter film, being so destroyed, and that evidence you see in the Carpenter film, We’ll get a glimpse into that.”

He adds that much of the reason for those close ties to the original are producers Eric Newman and Marc Abraham along with director Matthijs van Heijningen who “have such respect for the original film that they’re not trying to do a remake, they’re just trying to pay homage to the original and also do the right thing with what I think is a real cool way in to doing that, and revisiting the material.”

Filming began a week ago in Toronto.

Dan Dare Pilot of the Future in Prisoners of Space

Sam Worthington

When MTV News caught up with Worthington during a “Clash of the Titans” press junket, the actor confirmed rumors that he’s attached to a movie based on British science-fiction hero “Dan Dare,” and offered an update on the status of “The Last Days of American Crime,” based on the Radical Publishing series by Rick Remender.

As for the rumors connecting him to a “Dan Dare” movie, Worthington confirmed that he’s involved with the project, but stopped short of explaining his role. However, he did indicate that the film would be inspired by the recent reboot of the character’s adventures under writer Garth Ennis.

“‘Dan Dare,’ same type of thing — we’re seeing how they’re going to develop it and where they want it to go,” he said. “I’m at that stage now where I want to do movies where I get my $16 worth. … Something like ‘Dan Dare,’ there was something in the reboot by [Garth Ennis] that was amazing.”
